Research Interest

There are a million ways to kill bacteria, but to selectively target a single kind of them amongst all other species is not so simple. One way of achieving this involves using the specific enzymes that the bacteria produce and turning these enzymes against themselves.

My research project aims on design and synthesis of very selective antibiotics. These antibiotics are designed to become activated only when they undergo a reaction that is catalyzed by bacteria’s indigenous enzymes. Thus, they will selectively kill only those bacteria that express the targeted enzyme, leaving others untouched.
